AVATAR Movie: How James Cameron is Big Business bringing in the Cash
Posted on February 4, 2010 by admin
“Avatar” is now officially king of the movie world, internationally and domestically. James Cameron’s “Avatar” has grossed over $601 million, officially making it the highest grossing domestic film of all time, and has surpassed the $2 billion (yes, billion!) mark in worldwide sales. Money talks, and Avatar is delivering…
Two billion dollars! Think about that. A movie starring blue aliens and Sam Worthington — an actor who, a year ago, no one had ever heard of — just made $2 billion. To put this in perspective, a Honda Accord costs roughly $25,000. The worldwide gross of “Avatar” could buy a new Honda Accord for all 82,000 seated fans at the new Cowboys Stadium — with some gas money to spare. Or, if the gross was spread to every man, woman, and child in the United States, this would purchase every single one of them a basic-tier Netflix subscription. (Adding “Avatar” to all of their queues would be completely optional, put probably polite.)
The worldwide gross of “Avatar” is now twice the gross domestic product (GDP) of the entire country of Greenland. Actually, the gross of “Avatar” ranks higher than 29 other countries GDPs, including Belize, Liberia, and East Timor.
Naturally, this has all been very good news for the “Avatar” studio, Fox. Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp. (which owns Fox), spoke of a possible “Avatar” sequel during a quarterly earnings conference call earlier in the week.
“Jim had ideas for one,” Murdoch said. “We haven’t come to any agreement with him on budget or timing.” Murdoch, though, isn’t expecting a sequel anytime soon. “Being Jim Cameron, I wouldn’t hold your breath for an early one.”
Cameron is notorious for taking long breaks between directing films. His last film before “Avatar” was 1997’s “Titanic” — the now former highest grossing film of all time. Before “Titanic,” Cameron directed 1994’s Arnold Schwarzenegger smash hit “True Lies.” Cameron is attached to Yukito Kishiro’s “Battle Angel,” which has a tentative 2011 release date but he has been coy to provide any details on whether it will be his next project or, with the success of “Avatar,” if he will put “Battle Angel” on hold to jump right into the sequel.
Avatar proves the movie industry can bring home the cash.
What do you think about AVATAR? If you had a chance to invest in James Cameron’s next movie, would you do it? Leave a comment…
