Daytona Nascar 500 drivers qualified Saturday at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. - Dale Earnhardt Jr, and Mark Martin both Hendrick Motorsports teammates have both secured a front row positions in the Daytona 500 Nascar event.
Mark Martin was the only driver to qualify topping 191 MPH on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 earning the first pole of his career for NASCAR’s season opening race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start in second position after qualifiying with his worst qualifying start. in his Sprint Cup career.
The honor for the Hendrick Motorsports in the front row sweep continues for Hendrick Motors. The top 35 drivers from last season are guaranteed started positons in next Sunday’s race, but their positions won’t be set until Thursday’s 150 mile qualifying races.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup series kicked off the 2010 season with qualifying for the 52nd Daytona 500 with NASCAR’s most veteran driver Mark Martin taking the pole in his No 5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet with a lap of 47.074 seconds/ 191.188 mph. Mark Martin is the oldest pole-sitter in Daytona 500 history at 51 years of age, topping Dale Jarrett who won the pole at age 48 in 2005. Martin is off to a great start for the 2010 season after winning more poles than any other driver in 2009.
Along side of Martin on the front row is fan-favorite & Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his No. 88 AMP Energy / National Guard Chevrolet. Earnhardt Jr missed the Pole by a mere .068 seconds.
It was the second time in four years that a team has swept the front row for Daytona 500 qualifying. The Robert Yates team accomplished the feat in it in 2007.
Leading the best of the rest - and a Chevrolet sweep of the top three qualifying slots - was Ryan Newman and his No. 39 US Army Chevrolet with a lap of 47.225 seconds/ 190.577 mph.
Bill Elliott and his No. 21 Motorcraft / Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center Ford gave the manufacturer their best effort this afternoon.
Juan Pablo Montoya and his No. 42 Target Chevrolet rounded out the top five qualifiers.
4-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was sixth fastest.
Kurt Busch gave Dodge their best result, he was seventh quick. Brother Kyle gave Toyota their best effort, after running 9th quick during the session.
Four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon was 10th quick, meaning all four Hendrick cars were in the top 10.
Although speeds were expected to increase with a larger restrictor plate inlet, the track qualifying record by by Bill Elliott on February 15th, 1987 was clearly safe. He turned a lap around the 2.5-mile oval of 210.364 mph.
Overall, 54 cars ran laps attempting to qualifying for the great american classic race.
